What to Expect

The tour will start at a hotel in Dickwella, where you will begin your cycling excursion to the MulKirigala Ancient Temple through the picturesque countryside. Each pedal stroke brings new discoveries, offering experiences that many tourists might miss during their holiday in Sri Lanka.

You will cycle through water streams, paddy fields, and mini forest areas, reaching MulKirigala Temple. Along the way, you will enjoy a refreshing coconut drink. Mulkirigala Rock Temple rises about 676 feet from the surrounding landmass and features seven cave temples across five terraced areas of varying altitudes.

The temple, one of 64 constructed by King Kawantissa and originally called 'Muhudu Gira,' dates back to the 3rd Century BC. The Chetiya at the uppermost terrace is believed to house Lord Buddha relics offered by King Saddhatissa. Historical manuscripts credit several kings, including King Mahanaga, King Kawantissa, King Dutugemunu, King Parakramabahu the Great, King Saddhatissa, King Valagamba, King Jetta Tissa I, and King Parakramabahu I, with contributing to the temple's construction during their reigns.

TThe remaining temples from the Kandyan era showcase magnificent examples of Kandyan arts and crafts in Buddha images and cave paintings. Mulkirigala Rock Temple is one of the few 'Raja Maha Vihara' or 'Temples of the Great Kings' from the Kandyan Kingdom found outside the then Kandyan Kingdom. King Keerthi Sri Rajasinghe (1747 AD) patronized the reconstruction of this temple after it had been neglected for centuries since the reign of Parakramabahu the Great. The cycling distance for this tour is 22 km.
